Sierra Leone Presidential Run-off Saturday

Sierra Leone’s Presidential Run-off elections between main opposition Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP) candidate Julius Maada Bio and the ruling All People’s Congress (APC) party candidate Samura Kamara previously expected to take place on Tuesday March 27, 2018 is now rescheduled to be held on Saturday, March 31, 2018.According to reports from Freetown, the Supreme Court ordered the national Elections Commission to halt the holding of the elections, until complaints of electoral malpractices filed by aggrieved parties are addressed.
The opposition SLPP however threatened street protests against any further delays in the holding of the elections while they await the Supreme Court’s verdict, taking into considerations the need to prevent a constitutional crisis that may further prolong in office outgoing President Ernest Bai Koroma whose two-term mandate has expired.
Sierra Leone’s Presidential and Legislative General elections was held on March 7, with 16 political parties and independent candidates contesting, but no candidate was able to obtain the 55% of votes needed to be declared an outright winner, so the top two parties in the contest, the SLPP and the APC were set for a presidential run-off.
