Audit Saves Over LD$82 Million At MOH
The Director General of the Internal Audit Agency (IAA) Mr. Emmanuel Nyenswa has stated that out of their auditing exercise they conducted at the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare upon the recommendation of the outgoing Health Minister Dr. Bernice Dahn and others, government have been able to retrieve over LD$82 Million that was being paid to fictitious names on the Ministry’s payrroll.Speaking at last Thursday’s regular Ministry of Information, Cultural Affairs and Tourism (MICAT) regular press briefing last week Thursday, Mr. Nyenswa said because of the remarkable success at the Health Ministry, they have received directives to audit the payrolls of the Ministry of Education (MOE) that will affect all public schools in the country beginning April2, 2018.
“The exercise will help us employ or put more teachers names on payrolls under government’s pro-poor agenda, and it is also hoped that at the end of the exercise government will be able to generate funds for infrastructural development. We want to assure you that the pro-poor government is notgovernment as usual”.
During the questions and answers period, Mr. Nyenswa c larified that their mandate is different from that of the General Auditing Commission as, they at the IAA do internal auditing of all government ministries and agencies with funds provided by the Global Funds and that it had been a gradual process, as after auditing Internal Affairs and the Justice Ministry they will be also going to other Ministries.
