Fire Guts Over US$1.9m Property In 2017
Property valued at about US$ 1.9 million got destroyed as a result of fire disasters in 2017, the Director of Press and Public Affairs at the Liberia National Fire Service (LNFS) has disclosed.
Col. JassahGaryar told the Liberia News Agency in an interview on Monday that the LNFS also recorded over 160 fire incidents, 16 deaths and 10 major injuries due to fire disasters the same year. She blamed most fire incidents across the country on improper connection of electric power and the use of candles, generators, and mosquito coils, among others.
Garyar, however, pointed out that the LNFS was successful in fighting several fire outbreaks across the country during the year under review, and noted that more could be achieved if the LNFS increases its night patrols in and around the city to minimize the growing wave of power theft and illegal connections.
She added that it is important for Liberians to avoid illegal power connections since the Liberia Electricity Corporation (LEC) has trained workers who are responsible to do connections.
According to her, the LNFS is prepared to increase its fight against fire outbreaks, stating that one of such preparedness is creating awareness across the nation to educate people on how to prevent fire outbreaks.
Meanwhile, she is calling on the Liberian government to empower the LNFS with the necessary logistics to enable it adequately fight fire outbreaks.
