Health Minister Wants Violence Against Women Addressed
Health Minister Dr. Wilhelmina Jallah has disclosed that Liberian women and girls are vulnerable to sexual and gender-based violence, stressing the need to address the menace.
Dr. Jallah said Liberian women and girls are part of the vulnerable population and as such, addressing the unwholesome act of abuse against them is a positive step that should be embraced by all well-meaning Liberians.
Speaking at the official launch of the “National Project to Enhance the Protection Women and Girls against Sexual and Gender-Based Violence” at a local hotel in Monrovia on Tuesday, she noted that many girls ignore the risk involved with sexual and gender-based violence and as such, they should be protected at all levels of the society.
She pointed out that there is a need for the government and partners to empower women and girls not only financially but also to give them knowledge to understand sexual reproductive health.
Dr. Jallah stressed that the Ministry of Health will work along with ActionAid and other local and international organizations in helping to reduce any form of sexual and gender-based violence across Liberia.
