Open Budget Essential To Citizens

Deputy Information Minister Daniel Gayedyu has said an open budget process is essential because it gives citizens an understanding of how public resources are managed.
Minister Gayedyu made the statement Wednesday at a high-level engagement roundtable interactive forum held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Monrovia. He said the commitment will make available to the public information related to the executive budget, the budget speech and audit report, which will allow the citizens to fully participate in the budget process.
According to him, this commitment is critical in achieving accountability, transparency, public participation and formal oversight which are central to the Open Government Partnership (OGP) commitments and action plan.
Gayedyu, who is also the chairperson of the OGP, said the public has ‘very little knowledge of where critical bills and laws are in terms of approval within the legislative process.’
According to him, the 2015 Open Budget Survey assessed legislative oversight of the budget process in Liberia as weak as is the case of the audit process and public participation in budgeting.
