Thirty Muslims from across the country are expected to attend this year’s Hadj, the pilgrimage to Mecca which is a religious duty of all Muslims across the world.
Making the disclosure to the Liberia News Agency (LINA) in Monrovia on Tuesday, the Grand Mufti of Liberia, Sheikh Abubakar Soumaworo, said the trip is being made possible through the kind gesture of President George Manneh Weah. “We appealed to President George Weah to send 10 Muslims for this year’s Hadj, but the President promised to increase the number to 30,” Mufti Soumaworo disclosed.Mufti Abubakar Soumaro noted that this is the first of its kind in Liberia for a sitting President to identify with the Islamic community in such a way, noting that the Muslim community will forever be grateful to the President.
He however pointed out that the goodwill of the President to the Muslim community recently is not strange to them, noting that President Weah has always identified y with them, especially in 1994 when he donated food and other items to the Islamic community while playing soccer in Europe.
“With these and other goodwill gestures of President Weah to us, we the Muslims in Liberia vow to be loyal, obedient to him and his government in line with the development of Liberia,” the Grand Mufti said.
Mufti Soumaworo is meanwhile appealing to the Liberian leader to facilitate the enactment of the observance of Ramadan as a national holiday, as is the case in other African countries.
He said they will use the last 10 days of fasting to pray for Liberia, the President and the government to accomplish its Pro-Poor Agenda.
