Independence Day Orator

President George Manneh Weah has nominated the Minister of Finance and Development Planning Hon. Samuel D Tweah as the National orator for this year’s 171st Independence Day anniversary on July 26, 2018
“The President has the prerogative to select, all the past Presidents have followed the same procedure, and he has seen it best to select Hon. Samuel Tweah, the Finance Minister,” adding that this year every county superintendent will host and supervise their own programs under the overall supervision of the Ministry of Internal Affairs,” he said.
This appointment was disclosed by the Chief of Protocol of the Republic of Liberia, Mr. Jarvis Witherspoon when he addressed the Ministry of Information, Cultural Affairs and Tourism (MICAT) regular Thursday press briefing at the Information ministry yesterday to announce activities marking the auspicious occasion.Finance Minister Tweah’s selection by the President clears doubts over whether Liberia under the CDC administration was about to break from tradition by inviting applications from concerned Liberians to apply, to serve as National Independence day orator to a vetting committee headed by the Monrovia City Corporation (MCC) and the Ministry of Gender.
The Chief of Protocol explained that this year’s celebration will strictly adhere to the procedure that only people who are invited at the events with invitation cards will be allowed into places where events will be taking place, which begins on the 19th July with the Golden Image Award dinner that takes place at the Monrovia City hall, to be followed by an Intercessory Prayers service to be offered at a Mosque in the Coco-cola bottling Factory area on Friday at 12:00 Noon.
According to the Chief of Protocol, also on Friday July 20, there will be a musical festival put together by the Ministry of Information and the Liberian Crusaders for Peace at the SK Doe Sports Complex in Paynesville to be followed at 3{00 pm by a football and kickball game between the Executive and the Legislative branches of government.
He said there will also be an I.E. and Mighty Barrolle old-timers football match, which is expected to be very exciting and on Sunday July 21, the Liberia Council of Churches (LCC) will host an Intercessory service at the Centennial Memorial Pavilion on Ashmun Street and on that same Sunday there will be a friendly football encounter between Liberia and Sierra Leone at the SK Doe Stadium. “Information concerning entrance fee will be announced later,” he said.
“On Monday July 22, there will be the dedication of completed government projects to be performed by President Weah. This will include the launch of new postal stamps and the dedication of the annexes to the Capitol Building. At 4:00pm there will be the youth interactive dialogue at the Monrovia city Hall, to be followed at 7:00 pm by the LRA tax payers’ appreciation,” he said.
He said other events climaxing towards the Independence day celebration on July 26 include, the conferment of honors program on distinguished Liberians for their respective contributions to the state to be performed by President Weah on Tuesday evening at the Foreign Ministry Hall, and on Wednesday July 25th at 12:00 am there will be a children’s extravaganza to be followed by the President visiting the disabled and the disadvantaged at 3:00pm.
“On July 2t6, 2018 there will be the lighting program, and this year’s events will be held under the theme ‘Unifying the nation for Progressive Development’. On that day, the celebration will start at 6:45 to 7:00am with official parade and troops and the arrival of the President at the Barclay Training center (BTC) from where guests will proceed to the Centennial Memorial Pavilion for the official indoor programs. The oration will be delivered by Finance minister Tweah,” he said.
Mr. Witherspoon added that the after the centennial memorial Pavilion officials programs, guests in Monrovia will be expected to attend the independence day dinner lunch at 2:00pm at the Executive Pavilion on Ashmun Street and at the Brewerville city halls respectively. At 7:00pm will be the Independence Day ball at the Centennial Memorial Pavilion that will also be strictly by special invitation.
He added that the last event of this year’s Independence day celebration will take place on Friday, July 27 with children socializing with the President, adding that they expect each country to host their own Independence day activities. By John L. Momoh
