President Weah Reaffirms Liberia’s Commitment to One-China Policy

President George Manneh Weah has reaffirmed the commitment of Republic of Liberia to the One-China Policy, which is a key diplomatic policy position of the People’s Republic of China aimed at restricting foreign government to recognize and do diplomatic business with Taiwan.
He said the partnership between Liberia and China will remain strong under his leadership as the two countries seek further frontiers that mutually benefit them and their peoples.Speaking Thursday July 19, 2018, at the Capitol during the dedication of two newly constructed annexes, President Dr. George Manneh Weah recounted China’s numerous contributions to Liberia, and noted that their contributions will always be remembered by the government and people of Liberia.
He said: “Liberia and the People’s Republic of China have a longstanding relationship for over 40 years; the relationship continues on the path of growing stronger for the benefits of both the peoples of Liberia and the People’s Republic of China.”
He used the occasion to outline several projects undertaken by the People’s Republic of China that continue to benefit Liberia and its citizens, such as the SKD Sports Complex, the Jackson F. Doe Memorial Hospital, the Ministerial Complex project among others.
He said the people of Liberia will always remain grateful to President Xi Jinping, the government and the peoples of the People’s Republic of China for their developmental support to Liberia.
President Weah said the construction of the two wings of the Capital Building that host members of the National Legislature is a continued demonstration of China’s support to Liberia, as a result of the strong relationship that exists between the two countries spanning over 40 years.
The Liberian leader called on the leadership of the National Legislature to ensure that the building is properly maintained. He said: “I want to admonish us; it’s not what they give us, but to maintain what has been given to us is what matters.”
