“Agriculture Is Key”

-Pres. Weah says,
President George Manneh Weah says agriculture has got no substitute in national efforts to obtaining food security and maintaining a healthy population. He said food production towards self-sufficiency is a centerpiece of his government’s Pro-Poor Agenda for Prosperity and Development and he would leave no stone unturned to achieve this goal. The Liberian leader made the remarks Wednesday, December 5, 2018 when he officially launched the distribution of over 200 metric tons of rice or 80,000 bags at the Freeport of Liberia.
The Government of Liberia through the Ministry of Commerce in partnership with TRH Trading, a Liberian-owned company has brought into the country 80,000 bags or 4,000 metric tons of 25kg of the Pro Poor rice from India to be sold on the Liberia market.
The rice, which comes in two grades, 100 percent broken or short grain and five percent broken or long grain, will be sold on the market for US$10.00 and 11.00 respectively.
He said making rice, also known as political commodity in Liberia, available and affordable for the people of Liberia is the preoccupation of his Government and this will be achieved to help reduce the high cost of the country’s staple.

The Liberian leader indicated that the move on the part of government will afford Liberians the opportunity to make choices in terms of the quality and price of rice on the market, which encourages competition amongst importers, distributors, and dealers of rice and other commodities on the local market.

For his part, the Managing Director of the National Port Authority (NPA), Bill Twehway warned rice dealers against selling the commodity above the stipulated US$10.00 and US$11.00 as announced by the Ministry of Commerce as anyone caught in such unwarranted act will face the full weight of the law.

Twehway then lauded President Weah for such vision geared towards lifting the ordinary Liberians from the state of poverty as enshrined in the government’s Pro-Poor Agenda for Prosperity and Development (PAPD).

He also thanked authorities at the Ministry of Commerce for providing the partnership funding for the importation of the ‘Pro Poor Rice’ which will enable ordinary Liberians afford a bag of rice.

Tweh way applauded TRH Trading for partnering with the Government of Liberia through the Ministry of Commerce to import such huge quantity of rice into the country to assist the government to cater for its people.

Also speaking to journalists following the launch of the ‘Pro Poor Rice’ by President Weah, an executive of TRH Trading, Emmanuel Nimely, said the partnership between his company and the government is in the right direction because it is geared towards making affordable not only rice, but other basic commodities for the ordinary Liberian citizens.

According to the TRH Executive, the company is also looking into the market to see which other commodities it can import to make them affordable in fulfillment of the government’s development agenda.
