-Ready To Deal With Abusers Of Free Speech
The President of the Press Union of Liberia (PUL), Charles B.Coffey.Jr, has disclosed that modalities are being worked out for the reconstitution of the National Media Council of the Union.
Coffey said, the PUL has reached the decision to reconstitute the council in an effort to empower the body address the creeping culture of abuse of free speech and freedom of the press, particularly the use of talkshows to insult personalities in the society during radio program.The Media Council, as part of efforts to enhance self-regulatory regime of the Liberian Media is comprised of nine membership committee whose two year tenure has expired in April this year and a new membership is expected to be constituted in July 2019.
According to Coffey, the reconstitution of the Council will enhance the productivities and create new dynamism in the official function of the group.
He made the statement on Tuesday at a five day European Union (EU) Visibility and communication requirements training for stakeholders; “using the airways to get at individual is unprofessional and it has the propensity to damage the credibility of the Liberian media among the international community”, Coffey declared.
The leader of the Liberian Journalists observed that some media institutions and individual journalists are involved in blackmailing prominent citizens just to get money from them and advised journalists to be guided by the ethics of journalism in the course of their professional duties.
Meanwhile, Coffey called on Journalists to be professional in the discharge of duties, stressing that journalism is a noble profession that requires discipline and Nobel characters.
