As the government of Liberia introduces new policy of salary harmonization, the Assistant Director for mobile money-government of Liberia platform for digital or electronic payment system, Mr. Sethelo Mulbah, Escape to an unknown destination for his life.Mr. Mulbah was accused by some government officials, civil servants and ex-combatants loyal to the government and other regime instigating what is now a growing wave of resistance towards the government’s new policy of salary harmonization, a policy meant to essentially reduce salary across government entities by 50% in compliance with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) regulation aimed at rebooting the Liberian economy.
According to sources, Mr. Mulbah was one of the key plays of the salary harmonization.
An independent investigation conducted by this paper has established that some covert operatives are using every means possible to get even with those perceived as supportive of the harmonization process; the threats have intensified ahead of another round of nation-wide protest announced by the group under the banner “Council of Patriots” on December 30, 2019, for President Weah to step down.
This new austerity measure has left the Liberian government indebted to civil servants for months without pay despite the huge reduction in salary. This situation is brewing tension that could culminate in a mass protest being planned for December 30, 2019 by a vocal talk show host in collaboration with some political parties and other interest groups to the new policy.
They insist if the government doesn’t abandon course and curb corruption which is prevalent in this administration, they will ask the president step down. The group argues while measure looks good, it untimely.
So far, the government is not reneging on the policy which political analysts believe make the December 30, 2019 protest inevitable.
As the whereabouts of Mr. Sethelo B. Mulbah remains unknown, several officials are now planning to resigned from the Weah administration in protest of the new measure that is bringing untold suffering to the population.
