For Attacking Ex VP Boakai
CDC Hits Back At Former Min. Konneh
On heel of recent attack against former Liberia’s Vice President Joseph NyumaBoakai by former Finance and Development Planning Minister, Mr. Amara Mohammed Konneh, the Congress for Democratic Change (CDC), a subset of the ruling Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC) has angrily reacted on behalf of the former Vice President.
Konneh, who has been a long-time absentee on the political scene, in his recent outburst, accused the former vice president of being responsible for the rift in the former ruling Unity Party (UP).
He said the rift has seen former President Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf throwing her weight and support behind CDC candidate George Weah and her subsequent expulsion from the UP, along with several of her close associates.
Mr. Amara Konneh’s outburst against the former vice president came almost immediately following the former vice president’s extension of an olive branch and apology to all those who may have been affected by the fallout from dissension in the ranks of the UP at the time. In the public view, the former Vice President’s action was timely and showed statesmanship and strength of character.
Accordingly, speaking at a news conference on Thursday, October 31, 2019, the Youth League of the CDC through its Deputy Secretary General for Administration, Mr. Hassan Newland, said the recent action by the former Finance Minister is an attempt to give the political leader of the Alternative National Congress (ANC) undue popularity at the detriment of former Vice President Boakai.
“Though we don’t support Mr. Boakai but we see this as a stinging war being waged on the class of a particular people by those who think this country is their birthright and is bent on destroying the character of the ordinary people like they did with former President Samuel Kanyon Doe and doing with President Weah by using people like Amara and others to do their bidding while they group to come back to power under a Cummings Presidency, which is a daydream that is far from reality,” said Newland.
According to him, the recent attack against former VP Boakai is a pseudo fight of former Presiden Johnson-Sirleafthrough her former Finance Minister to destroy the former Vice President and create their own; elite Cummings for the presidency.
He called on President George Manneh Weah and officials of government to prioritize reconciliation as a driving force for national unity.
“In conclusion, the Youth League wants to assure the Liberian people that we will continue to guide the decision they made at the ballot box to have elected President Weah and are willing to defend their own to the last drop of their sweat,” he added.
